I make images that explain or celebrate life. This I have done as a scientist and an artist. I pursued a career as a professor at Harvard Medical School and the University of Michigan Medical School, where I received awards for teaching and research and was elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). My research used video microscopy as a tool to understand how cells called macrophages ingest particles and fluids. My published papers include my illustrations, animations and videos. I am now Emeritus Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School.

I discovered over the course of my scientific career that I am most interested in water and how it moves inside cells. So now I make video art inspired by water.

 

As an artist, I made thousands of portraits working summers on the boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ, and later in private commissions. I studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League and filmmaking at the New York Film Academy in New York City. My paintings and video art have been exhibited at YpsiGlow and 22 North Gallery in Ypsilanti, MI, and at the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
