Swanson Vital Arts is incorporating time-lapse video microscopy of cells in action, beginning with videos taken in the Swanson lab of mouse macrophages drinking the fluid that surrounds them.
These images will be used to build video fountains.

In the video below, animations have been overlaid onto the phase contrast microscope images to show where the macrophage's membranes are as the it engulfs extracellular fluid.
The video ends with a cartoon model of how the cell takes in both large and small molecules but allows the small solutes to leak back out through small transient connections between the vesicles.
