Joel Swanson developed a unique kind of video portraiture, in which the model is recorded sitting as if for a drawn or painted portrait, often inside a box designed for the final display. The resulting video image is presented on a large video monitor, which shows the model at life size. The image looks like a classic painted portrait, but with a striking vitality and presence.
